Dog Training Freshwater
Freshwater has a relaxed, salty village feel, and dogs are part of it. Morning coffee runs, surf checks at the beach and lagoon walks all involve a dog who needs to stay calm around crowds, water and other dogs.
Surfers carrying boards, kids running down to the sand, seagulls hunting for chips and cyclists whizzing along the paths all compete for your dog’s attention.
Dogs At Work offers dog training Freshwater families can rely on, from the wobbly first weeks with a puppy to polishing an adult dog’s manners.
Lagoon walks and water distractions
The Curl Curl Lagoon off leash area and the neighbouring Adams Street Reserve are favourites for local dogs. Both are wonderful places to let a dog stretch their legs, and both are full of temptations: birds on the water, sand to dig, ducks to chase and plenty of other dogs. A dog without a solid recall can turn a lovely outing into a stressful one very quickly.
We teach the skills that make these outings a pleasure.
A dependable recall around wildlife
Birds and water are two of the most exciting things in a dog’s world. We teach your dog to come back to you even when a pelican lands nearby, using rewards that matter to your dog and a step by step approach that builds reliability before you rely on it at the lagoon.
Calm play
Some dogs play with such intensity that other dogs find them overwhelming. We teach dogs to pause, breathe and take breaks in play, so games stay fun for everyone.
The ability to switch off and head home
After a swim and a run, many dogs are wired and reluctant to leave. We teach a relaxed exit routine, so the end of the visit does not turn into a chase around the park.
Because rules can change, always check the current signs and council information before letting your dog off leash.
Footpath manners near the beach
Most Northern Beaches beaches are off limits to dogs, including Freshwater Beach itself. That means much of your dog’s daily life happens on footpaths, in reserves and along the streets around the beachfront and Freshwater Village. On a sunny weekend these places fill up with people carrying food and drinks, children on scooters, joggers, prams and other dogs. A dog who pulls, jumps up or lunges quickly becomes a problem in that crowd.
We put serious work into footpath manners. That includes loose leash walking past distractions, waiting calmly at crossings, ignoring dropped food and greeting people politely. We also teach settling outside cafes, so your dog can lie quietly beside your table while you enjoy a coffee instead of straining toward every passing plate.
Freshwater, Curl Curl and North Curl Curl
Freshwater owners are usually juggling surf, work and family, so we keep training practical and easy to fit around a busy week. Short daily practice beats long occasional sessions, and we show you how to work training into things you already do, such as the walk to the shops or the wait at the school gate.
Freshwater
The village and the streets around it are excellent training grounds for calm walking, settling and polite greetings. The hills leading down toward the water also give us a chance to work on steady, controlled descents.
Curl Curl
The lagoon and its surrounding paths are perfect for practising focus around bikes, prams and joggers. Shared paths can be tricky for dogs who chase movement, so we teach a calm response to fast moving objects, including moving to the side and keeping attention on you as they pass.
North Curl Curl
There are plenty of quiet streets where we can build calm walking habits, gate manners and polite greetings with neighbours. It is a great place for working on the basics without too many distractions before adding difficulty.
Wherever you are, the goal is a dog who is easy to live with and easy to take out.

Planning a holiday or a big work stretch? Farm Stay and Train turns time away from home into structured progress. It is a blissful, structured holiday camp for dogs, where your dog learns and plays in a calm setting rather than sitting in a kennel.
Groups are limited to five dogs, so every dog gets plenty of individual attention, and the atmosphere is very different from a large boarding facility. Every dog is approved before booking, so start with a call or text to our trainer to talk about your dog’s needs. During the stay you receive video updates so you can see your dog settling in and enjoying themselves. You only need to bring a collar or harness, which is returned when your dog goes home. If your dog needs medication or has other specific requirements, tell us when you enquire.
Freshwater dogs who love water and adventure often thrive in this kind of setting, and the training they receive gives you a head start on behaviours that are hard to change at home.
Frequently asked questions
Will my dog need to be sociable for a farm stay?
Not at all. Stays are designed around each dog’s individual needs, and a dog who finds other dogs difficult can work on building positive associations with our trainer.
My dog pulls badly on the way to the lagoon. Where do we start?
We start with a private session, working on loose leash walking in quiet conditions and building up to the busier spots. Within a few sessions most dogs are noticeably calmer and more connected.
Can you help with a dog who chases birds or bikes?
Yes. We teach impulse control and a reliable recall, and we help you manage the environment while those skills develop.
Do you offer help for teenage dogs?
Yes. Adolescence is one of the most common times to seek help, and our programs are designed to meet you and your dog where you are.
