Dog Training Dee Why
Dee Why is a suburb of contrasts. Down at the beachfront there are apartments, cafes and a lively town centre, and up in the hills there are family homes with gardens and bush views.
A dog raised in a ground floor unit near the promenade has very different needs from a dog raised in a big house with a backyard in the hills, and good training respects that.
Dogs At Work offers dog training Dee Why owners can fit around real life, using science based methods and programs built around your dog and the way you live.
Town centre manners
Dee Why Town Centre and the beachfront promenade are busy from morning to night. There are cafes, shops, apartment blocks, buses, prams, joggers and dogs on every corner. A dog who lunges at other dogs, jumps on strangers or barks at every passing scooter turns a simple walk into hard work.
We teach the skills that make town life easy:
Loose leash walking
Walking beside you on a relaxed lead, even when the footpath is crowded, is the foundation of every outing. We build it gradually, adding distractions only when your dog is ready.
Calm greetings
Many town dogs struggle with the constant stream of people who want to say hello. We teach your dog to greet politely, including keeping four paws on the ground and waiting for permission to interact.
Quiet settling at a cafe or outdoor table
If you enjoy weekend brunch with your dog, settling is one of the most useful skills you can teach. We show you how to build it step by step, starting in quiet places and working toward busier ones.
Handling lifts, stairwells and shared spaces
Apartment dogs need good manners in communal areas, and we help you practise them in the real building.
Because dogs are generally not allowed on Northern Beaches beaches, the footpaths and promenade are where your dog needs to shine, and we practise there. That gives you a dog who can join you in the parts of Dee Why that are open to dogs, and behave well in all of them.
Narraweena, Cromer, Wheeler Heights and Beacon Hill
Higher up, the picture changes.
Narraweena and Cromer
These are classic family suburbs where puppies grow up with kids, visitors and backyard adventures. We focus on gentle greetings, gate and fence manners and calm behaviour around children. Families with busy schedules also benefit from training that involves everyone, so each person in the household uses the same cues and the dog receives consistent messages. We can also help with common family dog challenges, such as jumping up at the school gate, stealing toys and food, and getting overexcited when friends come over.
Wheeler Heights and Beacon Hill
Bushland reserves and quiet streets mean regular wildlife encounters. A passing lizard, bird or scent trail can send an unprepared dog off on a mission, so we build a reliable recall and strong leave it skills. Homes that back onto bush often have gaps in fences and gates that are tempting to explore, and we help you make your yard safer while your dog’s training develops.
Whichever part of the area you live in, we work at your home and on your street, so the training reflects your actual routine and surroundings.
Puppy development in a mixed suburb
Many Dee Why puppies start life in a unit and move to a house, or the other way around, and both situations bring challenges. Puppies grow fast, and the habits they form in the first few months tend to last. Our four week Puppy Program prepares you for every stage of development, and we tailor the advice to your living situation.
For a unit puppy, that often means building a strong toilet routine on a schedule that works with lifts and stairs, teaching calm behaviour in shared corridors and providing plenty of mental stimulation indoors. For a puppy in a family home, it may mean managing the garden, teaching the household how to interact and preventing rough play with children. In both cases the goal is the same: a confident, well mannered dog who is a pleasure to live with.
Before taking a young puppy into public places, check with your vet about vaccination timing so you can make safe choices for your puppy.

For dogs with big energy
- 10 days of immersive training
- Private 99-acre farm
- Maximum of five dogs
- Video updates
Some Dee Why dogs simply need more space and structure than a busy suburb can offer. Farm Stay and Train gives your dog 10 days of guided learning, exercise and play with a small group of up to five dogs. Numbers are kept low so your dog gets plenty of one on one time and the atmosphere stays calm, in contrast to the noise of a large boarding facility.
Every dog is approved before booking, so you begin with a call or text to our trainer. Together you talk through your dog’s needs and decide whether a stay is a good fit. While your dog is away you receive video updates, and when they come home we help you keep the progress going. You do not need a social dog to attend. If your dog finds other dogs stressful, the stay is an opportunity to work on positive associations one on one.
Bring a collar or harness, which is returned when your dog goes home. If your dog needs anything specific, such as medication, you provide it. Many dogs return calmer, more focused and much easier to live with.
Frequently asked questions
What if my dog is still a young puppy?
Our four week Puppy Program is designed for exactly that, covering each stage of development and building a bond that lasts.
I live in an apartment near the beach. Is training still worth it?
Yes. In fact, apartment dogs often benefit the most from clear routines, calm manners and good settling skills.
My dog is fine with people but reactive to dogs. Can you help?
Yes. Behaviour support is part of our work, and we build plans gradually so your dog learns new responses without being overwhelmed.
Can the whole family be involved?
Absolutely. Consistency is the secret to lasting results, so we encourage everyone who lives with your dog to take part.
