Dog Training Collaroy
Collaroy’s long beachfront, cafe strip and sea breeze make it a favourite for people and their dogs. That popularity means plenty of foot traffic, and a dog who cannot handle it can make every outing stressful.
Runners, surfers, families with strollers and groups of friends heading out for brunch all share the same footpaths.
Dogs At Work provides friendly, science based dog training in Collaroy so your dog walks calmly, listens well and enjoys the neighbourhood as much as you do.
Beachside streets and busy footpaths
Dogs are generally not allowed on Northern Beaches beaches, so the beachfront footpath, the surrounding streets and the cafe strip along Pittwater Road become the main places to walk. That is a lot of time on a lead in a busy environment, and it puts pressure on lead manners, greetings and settling.
We use those environments for training, teaching skills that make life along the beachfront easier:
Loose leash walking past joggers and prams
Narrow paths and fast moving traffic mean your dog needs to stay close and not lunge at passers by or veer into their way. We teach a steady heel position, gradual difficulty increases and rewards for calm choices.
Calm greetings with passers by
Collaroy is friendly, and people often want to pat your dog. Teaching your dog to sit for greetings, or to politely ignore strangers when asked, protects everyone.
Quiet settling at a cafe table
Sitting with a coffee while your dog relaxes at your feet is one of the great pleasures of dog ownership, and we show you how to build it step by step.
Handling wind, sand and noise
Coastal environments bring gusts, flapping umbrellas, skateboards and sudden noises. We introduce these gradually so your dog becomes comfortable with a busy, changing environment.
Near Long Reef, the headland walks and the golf course fringe bring wide open views and plenty of scents, which is a great challenge for focus and recall. Rules for dogs at Long Reef and other public spaces can change, so always check current council information before you go.
Collaroy and Collaroy Plateau
Collaroy
Apartments and houses close to the beach mean lots of shared entrances, stairs and neighbours, so polite behaviour at doors and in common areas matters. We help dogs learn to wait at thresholds, walk calmly through hallways and lifts and stay relaxed when neighbours pass by. Barking at footsteps or noises outside is a common complaint in multi dwelling buildings, and we help you tackle it with a combination of training, enrichment and routine.
Collaroy Plateau
Up on the plateau, the streets are quieter, the blocks are bigger and the household routines are different. Families here often want help with puppies, teenage dogs and the everyday manners that make a home run smoothly. With more space comes more freedom for dogs to get into mischief, so we look at yard set up, fence security and outdoor routines. Many plateau homes also have driveways and gates where dashing behaviour is an issue, and we teach a solid wait.
We tailor each plan to the type of home you have, with sessions that take place in your real environment.
Adolescent dogs on the Northern Beaches
The teenage months are the most common time for owners to ask for help. Between roughly six months and two years, dogs become bolder, more distractible and more likely to test rules. The dog who used to walk nicely now pulls like a train, and the dog who came when called now looks over their shoulder and runs the other way.
This is not a sign of failure. It is normal development, and it can be managed with patience, consistency and good training. Here is what tends to help most:
Go back to basics
Reduce the difficulty and rebuild reliability before asking for more.
Use higher value rewards
Adolescent dogs are often more interested in the environment, so rewards need to be more exciting than what is around them.
Keep exercise and mental stimulation up
A teenage dog who is under exercised or bored is more likely to invent their own entertainment.
Stay consistent
Every person in the household should use the same cues and rules.
Keep sessions short and positive
A few minutes of focused practice several times a day works better than one long session.
Our private obedience sessions give you a structured plan for this stage, and our ongoing support keeps you on track when progress feels slow.

Stay, learn, come home ready
- 10 days of immersive training
- Private 99-acre farm
- Maximum of five dogs
- Video updates
If your dog needs a concentrated dose of training, Farm Stay and Train delivers it. Small groups of up to five dogs, individual attention from our trainer and video updates mean you can watch your dog grow in confidence from afar. The smaller group keeps the environment calm and avoids the chaos and noise that often come with large scale boarding.
Because every stay is personalised, dogs are approved before booking, so give our trainer a call or text to talk through your dog’s specific needs. Over 10 days on a private 99-acre farm, your dog has time to learn new skills, practise them in a quieter environment and enjoy structured play and rest. Dogs do not have to be sociable. If yours finds other dogs difficult, the stay is a chance to build positive associations under expert guidance.
You provide a collar or harness, which is returned when your dog goes home, plus any medication your dog needs. Many Collaroy owners book a follow up session at home to lock in the new habits along the beachfront footpaths and on the plateau.
Frequently asked questions
Do you offer training for teenage dogs?
Yes. Adolescence is one of the most common times to seek help, and our programs are built to meet you where you are.
Can you help with a dog who barks at noises in our building?
Yes. We look at what triggers the barking and build a plan that combines training, management and enrichment.
My dog gets overexcited when we walk near the cafes. What can we do?
We teach focus, settling and calm greetings in stages, starting away from the busiest areas and building up to the cafe strip.
How soon can we start with a new puppy?
As soon as you bring them home. Talk to your vet about safe outings and vaccination timing, and we will help with the rest.
