Dog Training Manly
Manly is one of the busiest places on the peninsula to walk a dog. The Corso, the ferry wharf, the ocean promenade and the weekend crowds all ask a lot of a dog who is still learning manners.
A dog who pulls, jumps up or ignores you in the middle of all that turns a pleasant stroll into hard work. Dogs At Work helps Manly owners build a calm, reliable dog using science based methods, and we do it in the places you actually live and walk.
Our programs are built around you, your dog and the life you really live, from the first wobbly weeks with a puppy through to polishing an adult dog’s manners.
Training built around Manly streets
A dog can be perfect in the lounge room and fall apart the moment a cafe table, a skateboard and a seagull appear at once. That is why we train where the challenge is real. Manly is packed with the exact distractions that undo good behaviour: food smells drifting from restaurants, visitors who want to pat every dog they see, prams, bikes, scooters and the constant hum of ferries coming and going.
Loose leash walking is a big focus for Manly dogs. Most beaches on the Northern Beaches are off limits to dogs, so the footpaths, promenades and village streets become the main stage for daily exercise. That means your dog spends a lot of time on a lead around crowds, and the quality of that experience depends on how well they have learned to stay connected with you. We teach dogs to check in with you around people, other dogs and busy foot traffic, instead of dragging you toward every distraction. A dog who walks calmly beside you is a dog who gets taken more places, and that is good for everyone.
How we build a calm walker in a crowded suburb
Good lead manners are not built by pulling back or by correcting a dog after the fact. They are built by teaching your dog what you want and rewarding it, in small steps, with the difficulty raised gradually. Here is how we approach it with Manly dogs.
We start somewhere quiet, such as a side street away from the Corso, and teach your dog that staying near you pays off. Once that is reliable, we add a little more challenge: a person walking past at a distance, a parked car, a cafe with a few tables. Each time your dog succeeds, we move the exercise a step closer to the busy areas. By the time you head down to the wharf or the promenade, your dog has already practised the same skills at lower levels of difficulty and knows what is expected.
We also teach a strong focus cue, so you can ask your dog to look at you when something exciting appears, and a settle routine, so your dog can relax on the ground while you stop to chat or wait for a coffee. Both of these are life skills in a suburb where you will regularly find yourself standing still in a crowd.
Once the basics are solid, the off leash area at Manly Lagoon Park is a good place to practise recall and calm play, and the bushland trails at Manly Dam suit relaxed on leash walks that reward a dog for staying close. Council rules on where dogs can go change from time to time, so always check the current signs and council information before you head out.
Fairlight, Queenscliff, North Manly and Manly Vale
We work with dog owners right across the Manly area, and each pocket of it brings slightly different challenges.
Fairlight
The harbour foreshore walk and the steep streets around Fairlight make loose leash manners and calm greetings essential. Narrow paths with sudden corners mean you often meet other dogs and people at close range, so we teach dogs to pass politely and keep moving. Hills are also a good place to build fitness and focus together.
Queenscliff
Owners here deal with the busy North Steyne stretch and a steady flow of visitors, which is a tough but useful test for focus and settling. Queenscliff is full of people who love dogs and want to say hello, so we teach polite greetings, including how to ask a dog to stay seated rather than launching at a stranger.
North Manly
This part of the area sits close to Manly Lagoon, so a dog who stays calm around water birds and other dogs makes every walk easier. It is also a great spot for practising recall in a controlled way once your dog is ready for it, with a long line to keep everyone safe while skills develop.
Manly Vale
The tracks around Manly Dam call for a dog who walks politely on leash and comes when called. Bush trails bring interesting smells, sudden wildlife movement and other trail users such as runners and mountain bikers, so a dog with good impulse control is a much safer and happier companion here.
What we offer Manly dogs and their owners
Whatever stage your dog is at, we have a program that meets you there.
Puppy Program
Bringing a puppy home can feel overwhelming. Over four weeks we prepare you for every stage of development, covering toilet routines, biting and mouthing, confidence with new experiences, and the early skills that make everything else easier. It also builds a lasting bond between you and your puppy.
Private obedience sessions
These are one hour sessions covering everyday obedience: engagement around dogs and people, loose leash walking, positions, and advanced work on request. Every session is tailored to your dog’s temperament, age and what you both need. See private training.
Behaviour support
If your dog has more complex behaviours, we can help. We use science based methods to understand what is driving the behaviour and build a plan you can follow at home.
Training at home and on your street
We train where real life happens, from farm stays to your own street. Working in your actual environment means the skills carry over to the places where you need them.
Farm Stay and Train
For dogs who need a focused reset, we offer an immersive stay. Read about Farm Stay and Train.
Ongoing support
Training does not end when a session finishes. You get ongoing guidance, progress videos and a trainer who is in your corner long after day one.
A reset for busy Manly households
- 10 days of immersive training
- Private 99-acre farm
- Maximum of five dogs
- Video updates
If ferry commutes, long work days or a packed social calendar make steady daily practice hard, our Farm Stay and Train program gives your dog 10 days of immersive training on a private 99-acre farm. Because it is a personalised experience, every dog is approved before booking, so you simply call or text our trainer to talk through your dog’s specific needs.
Numbers are kept to a maximum of five dogs. That keeps things calm, gives your dog plenty of one on one time and avoids the overwhelming noise and chaos you often find in large boarding facilities. You will receive video updates along the way so you can watch your dog learn and settle in. Your dog does not have to be sociable to attend. If they find other dogs difficult, the stay is a chance for our trainer to work closely with them on building positive associations. All you need to provide is a collar or harness, which is returned at the end of the stay, plus any medication your dog needs.
Many owners describe it as a structured holiday camp for dogs, and it pairs well with a follow up session at home so the new habits carry over into your daily routine.
Frequently asked questions
Can you train my dog at home in Manly?
Yes. We train where real life happens, which includes your own street and home. Working where the behaviour actually occurs is often the fastest way to change it.
My dog is fine at home but pulls on the Corso. Can you help?
This is one of the most common things we see. Dogs often behave well in familiar surroundings and struggle in busy places. We build skills in stages so your dog can cope with each new level of distraction.
How old does my dog need to be to start?
There is no minimum. Our Puppy Program is designed for young dogs, and our private sessions work for adolescent and adult dogs too.
Does my dog need to get along with other dogs to attend a farm stay?
No. Stays are designed around each dog’s individual needs, and a dog who finds other dogs stressful can use the time to build positive associations with our trainer.
