Dog Training Seaforth

Seaforth is a compact, hilly harbourside suburb where dog walks often mean stairs, steep footpaths and views over Middle Harbour. It is a lovely place to live with a dog, and it rewards a dog who walks calmly, pays attention and settles easily at home.

Dogs At Work brings practical, dog friendly training to Seaforth households, with programs shaped around your dog and the life you actually live.

Whether you have a new puppy who is turning your townhouse upside down or an adult dog who has never quite learned to walk politely, we can help.

Training for hills, stairs and village life

Seaforth Village is small enough that you will meet the same neighbours and dogs again and again, which makes good manners noticeable. When your dog greets people politely and walks without dragging you along the footpath, everyone in the street benefits. When they do not, it tends to be remembered.

We work on loose leash walking on steep gradients, which is a different skill from walking on the flat. Dogs often speed up going downhill and lean into the lead going up, and owners end up bracing against the pull or being towed. We teach dogs to keep pace with you and stay at a comfortable distance whatever the slope, so descents are safe and climbs are relaxed. We also work on calm greetings on narrow footpaths and settling while you chat outside the shops.

Walks toward the Spit and along the Middle Harbour foreshore are scenic but full of joggers, cyclists and other dogs, so we practise staying engaged with you as the world goes by. Seaforth Oval and the nearby reserves give us open space to build recall in a controlled way, using a long line so your dog can practise coming back from a distance without any risk of bolting. Council rules on where dogs may be off leash can change, so always check current signs before letting your dog run free.

Smaller homes, big personalities

Many Seaforth dogs live in townhouses, units and compact family homes, sometimes with limited yard space. That makes indoor manners especially important. A dog who is boisterous in a small space can feel like a dog who is everywhere at once, and a dog who has never learned to settle can be exhausting to live with.

Our private sessions cover the everyday skills that make life in a smaller home run smoothly:

Settling on a mat

A mat or bed becomes a place where your dog knows they are supposed to relax. We build the habit gradually, rewarding calm behaviour, until your dog can lie down and switch off while the household gets on with dinner, video calls and visitors.

Door manners

Waiting at the front door, not surging out when it opens and not launching at guests are the foundations of a calm home. In compact houses where the front door sits right beside the living space, these skills matter a lot.

Off furniture and staying out of spaces on request

Every household has different rules, and we help you teach yours clearly and consistently, so your dog knows what is expected.

Mental exercise as well as physical

Dogs who live in smaller spaces need more than a walk around the block. We show you simple training games, puzzle feeding and short skill sessions that tire a dog’s brain, which is often more effective than adding another lap of the oval.

What we offer Seaforth dogs and their owners

Puppy Program

Four weeks preparing you and your puppy for every stage of development, covering routines, mouthing, confidence with new experiences and early manners. It builds a lasting bond from the start. Puppy program.

We train where real life happens, from farm stays to your own street. In Seaforth that often means working on the steps, hills and narrow footpaths you use every day.

Ongoing support

Space to learn away from home

If your dog is a bundle of energy in a small home, a stay with plenty of room to move can do wonders. On our farm your dog spends 10 days learning in an environment built for training, with a small group capped at five dogs. That limit keeps things calm and gives each dog plenty of one on one attention, which is very different from the noise and chaos of a large boarding facility.

Every dog is approved before booking, so you start with a call or text to our trainer about your dog’s needs. During the stay you receive video updates, so you can see your dog settling in and learning. Stays suit dogs who need a jump start, dogs who are hard to train amid the distractions of home and dogs who need help building confidence around other dogs. If your dog is not very social, that is fine, because the program is designed around each dog individually.

It is a strong option for busy Seaforth households who want a jump start, followed by sessions at home to lock the progress in. You only need to supply a collar or harness, which is returned when your dog goes home, and any medication your dog requires.

The first weeks with a new dog in Seaforth

The early days shape a lot of what follows. If you have just brought home a puppy or adopted an adult dog, the routines you set now will stick. We recommend starting as you mean to go on: a consistent place to sleep, regular toilet breaks, short training moments scattered through the day and calm introductions to the sights and sounds of the suburb. Seaforth’s mix of steep streets, boats on the harbour, buses along Sydney Road and friendly neighbours provides plenty of gentle exposure, provided you take it at your dog’s pace.

Our Puppy Program guides you through each of these stages, and our private sessions can help if you have adopted an older dog who needs to learn the house rules from scratch.
